How to Get Noticed on Social Media When You’re Just Starting Out

Zero followers. We all start there, but we tend to forget that little nugget of information. We look at others and see a large number of followers and lots of engagement on their social media posts, and immediately our brains tell us it happened with the snap of a finger. When overnight success doesn’t happen for us, we get discouraged and sometimes even ditch social media altogether. If this sounds familiar, here are some tips to help you get noticed on social media when you are just starting out.
Go to your audience and go deep there.
One of my favorite Bible stories is when Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. He was not afraid of getting out there and seeking the lost. Jesus didn’t wait for the lost to come to Him — He went to the lost. While some bloggers and authors may find their target audience on Facebook, your people may hang out on Instagram or Pinterest. It is important to go where your audience lives and spend your time there. Find your audience and go to them.
When it comes to social media, quality is definitely better than quantity.
Back in the early days of social media, the general rule of thumb was to post multiple times per day, but times have changed. Users want a deeper experience from those they follow, and that means receiving more content they can use. Maybe you don’t have time to post to your social media accounts every day — and that’s OK. The key is to be consistent. Resist the urge to post content “just because.” Make sure your followers are encouraged and called to take action by what you have shared.
More people are finding and following you — yay! As you continue to be authentic and receptive, followers will want to take the step of interacting with your content. Maybe they will leave a comment or, better yet, share your content with others. Make sure to respond to those comments and shares and thank your followers for being a part of the community. In order to gain followers, be a good follower.
Consider going live on your social media platform of choice. Maybe schedule a live session in your Facebook group or record an Instagram reel. Your current followers will begin to put a face to the content, and you may even pick up new followers along the way.
Share and collaborate.
Is there someone you follow on social media who shares content that would benefit your audience? Share that content with your people, making sure to tag or give credit to the original author. Remember, your audience has come to you for support and encouragement. They will appreciate your heart for sharing a much-needed resource.
Be encouraged and not intimidated by new beginnings. Instead of trying to reach many, craft your content to the one who needs to hear your message. Be patient, authentic and consistent — and before you know it, you will have a group of dedicated followers who just can’t wait for your next piece of content.
