How To Write a Strong Introduction

Have you ever sat in front of your computer staring at the blinking cursor on the blank white page, unsure how to begin?

If so, you’re not alone. A good writer knows that how you start matters. This alone can make writing an introduction intimidating and even daunting. 

However, the same God who has called you to write and has equipped you to fulfill this calling (Hebrews 13:20-21) is faithful in the details — even the details of an introductory paragraph. 

Here are three ways to ensure you write a strong introduction:

1. Make it memorable.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1, NIV).

This is how God begins His Word. Chances are, even if you didn’t realize you had this memorized, you could quote it to someone who asked. This sentence is profound, not just because it’s scripture, but because it sets a big stage for what’s to come. 

A good introduction is clear, relatable and memorable. Ask yourself if your introduction checks these boxes before publishing.

2. Mix it up.

Next, mixing it up when writing a solid introduction is wise. Don’t start every blog post and/or chapter the same way. God made us to be creative. Ask Him how He wants you to begin, and look for inspiration in what He’s doing around you. 

Here are a few categories of introductory sentences to get you started:

• Ask a question. 
• Quote a reputable source.
• Use captivating imagery.
• Highlight a problem.
• Share something personal.

3. Meet your readers where they are.

Lastly, knowing your reader is a requirement if you hope to write a strong introduction. 

A great introduction written to the wrong audience is actually a poor introduction. As a writer, one of the best ways to serve and encourage your audience is to know who they are and what they need. Then work to ensure your introduction paves the way to meet that need. 

Are you writing to other writers? There’s a good chance they can relate to a blinking cursor and blank screen. Are you writing to moms? Be vulnerable with your parenting struggles and wins. Are you writing to the professional community? Don’t shy away from statistics and detailed information. 

No matter who it is, be faithful to know those God has called you to serve, and as Jesus did, meet them where they are.

Yes, it matters how you start, but don’t let the fear of getting it wrong keep you from writing. It’s OK to start, scratch it and start again. Sometimes, the beginning doesn’t fully come until the end is written. 

Next time you’re staring at a blank screen, take a minute to pray and ask the Lord for inspiration, and then write something memorable, creative and relatable. The words will come. They always do.
