“Just tell me where to start,” she said.
Suddenly my friend’s words took me back several years. I remember attending my first writing conference. Writer and agents and editors mingled. I felt like a wannabe.
It’s not that I didn’t love writing. I did.
It’s not that I didn’t have a book idea simmering just below the surface. I did.
It was that my dream of publishing seemed impossible. Nothing felt familiar.
“Start at the beginning,” I told her.
This was something I had to learn. When I first began, I focused on the finish line. It was overwhelming.
Every big dream starts with one small step.
That’s why I’m excited to be a part of the upcoming COMPEL course, 4 Steps to Getting Published. In this course, Tracie Miles and I share four steps to move you from stalled to the starting line. Though we have several books published between us, we remember what it feels like to be giddy with excitement (and fear) over new beginnings.
Publishing is hard work. It takes tenacity. It combines a love of writing and the business of writing. That’s why we’ll explore the following:
- How to write a powerful book proposal
- How to craft a one-page book query or one-sheet to present to publishers, agents and editors
- How to search for compatible publishers and how to get your work in front of them
- How to pitch your book idea
My friend has started taking the beginning steps toward publishing. She’s surprised at how taking one step at a time has refocused her. She’s no longer staring at the finish line, thinking how impossible it is! Instead, she’s celebrating every small step that takes her closer to her dream.
Are you wanting to go from parked to published?
It’s hard to know where to begin, how to prepare and how to get your book idea in front of publishers and agents in a way that will pique their interest and help your book go from just an “idea” to a product in book stores. This course is a must-watch for any serious writer wanting to be published.
