It’s a Wild World: Stepping Out Into Social Media
Did you hear that? The still small voice calling you to step out and use your voice?
I remember feeling the nudge to step out into the wild world of social media. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but did it anyway. Compelled to start using my voice to help hurting women heal from their past mistakes, I knew it was time.
I felt like Jeremiah when he said, “But if I say I’ll never mention the LORD or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!” (Jeremiah 20:9, NLT).
Maybe you’ve been feeling the same but don’t know how to get started.
Girl, can I just say, “Do it scared!”
Today, I want to share a few of the things I wish I’d known before I started. Here are four P’s to help you step out into the wild world of social media:
- Post prayerfully. Preparing to be vulnerable is vital. When I wrote my first post, I immediately wanted to hit delete. Know ahead of time that you’re going to feel a little naked. Cover yourself with prayers for self-confidence, and decide that writing for the audience of One is most important.
- Post purposely. Posting takes time. Decide on a schedule that works for you, and know that you’re the boss. Don’t let the algorithms boss you around. God is bigger than any human-made system. He can promote you better than anyone or anything. However, it’s important to honor your audience with good content.
- Post promptly. Planning is key. Consistency is of utmost importance. If you say you’re going to be there, then make sure you show up. Your platform is like hosting a party for your very special guests. You wouldn’t be late or not show up to your own party, so make a plan and stick to it.
- Post passionately. Publicizing your work via a platform isn’t for the faint of heart. There will be days you don’t feel like responding to comments. At times, you’ll feel like an imposter or you’ll be plumb worn out. Don’t lose heart. Stay connected to your WHO (God), WHAT (passion) and WHY (people).
When things get wild and overwhelming, keep these steps in mind to set the pace for a productive place to gather your tribe. It’s my hope these practical steps help you build a more powerful platform.
