I really want to write a book about my life.
I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say that sentence over the years. In fact, I read a statistic once that said 90% of people think they have a book inside of them and want to write about their life or experiences. Why? Because we all have a story to tell, and if God has helped us find victory in a difficult situation or overcome great adversity, we long to share it with others and help them experience victory too. And, if we are passionate about helping others through the sharing of our faith and the goodness of God, writing our story is a great place to start.
One of the dreams God laid on my heart many, many years ago was to write. Not just write anything, but write about the story God had been authoring in my life. Yet I didn’t see myself as a writer. I didn’t think I was qualified to be a writer, much less know how to be one. I wanted to share what God had been doing in my life but I wasn’t sure where to start and struggled with fear and insecurities.
After years of working at it, I now have five published books, write monthly devotions for Proverbs 31 Ministries Encouragement for Today and have a ministry blog. My life is now full of writing and God is continually authoring new stories in my life to tell! But I had to learn everything on my own, and only wish I had had the training available through Proverbs 31 Ministries COMPEL Training that is available to aspiring writers today! It’s so exciting to see our COMPEL members celebrating their writing successes and publication victories as a result of investing in their call to write by being a member of COMPEL.
COMPEL exists to help encourage women to pursue their calling to write, equip and train them to become better writers, and help them pursue their desire to be published in whatever format they are striving for, whether it be blogging, writing devotionals, or publishing a book. Everyone has a story to tell, but often times telling our story feels daunting. Even when we’re excited to share what God has done in our lives, sometimes it’s hard to know which details to share and which to leave out. It’s hard to feel confident that our words will resonate with our audience and make a difference in their lives. I’ve struggled with these challenges. Yet, it’s our personal stories that connect us with people the most, which makes knowing how to tell our stories well so important.
Whether you are writing or speaking, the ability to craft stories that create life-change and lasting impressions is important. Effective storytelling is not only one of the oldest tools of communication, but it is also one of the most powerful!
That’s why I would love to share with you “5 Techniques for Better Storytelling” with Proverbs 31 Ministries president, Lysa TerKeurst. It’s a free five-day email series that includes her teaching about the power of a story. You’ll learn how to:
- Use everyday illustrations to communicate life-changing truths
- Incorporate the key components that every great story needs
- Tell stories in a way that keeps your audience engaged
- Weave your stories with biblical truths that motivate listeners to take action in their lives
