How to Write for the Glory of God

How to Write for the Glory of God, by Charla Matthews

Do you ever feel insignificant in your ministry as a writer? I did. I felt minuscule, like one grain of sand in a shoreline brimming with others compelled to impact our world through words. Feelings of insignificance can only take root in the garden of comparison.

What do you see when you scan the horizon of writing for the glory of God? I saw too much competition and too little opportunity for my voice to be heard. But that was before God illuminated the need to shift my perspective; He used His Word to reveal the truth about my place in this world.

While reading the story of how Mary came to be the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26-28), God flipped my world upside down. I gained insight and encouragement for my writer’s heart, and I pray the same for you.

Consider God’s perspective of humanity from His abode.

Talk about a sea – and shoreline – of people!

The angel Gabriel traveled from God to Galilee, to Nazareth, to a virgin.

Are you tracking the narrowing of God’s focus? It doesn’t stop there.

God’s message was delivered to a specific virgin.

A virgin engaged to a man called Joseph.

A virgin named Mary.

From the expanse of earth’s humanity, the scene narrowed to one virgin girl named Mary. God chose a specific human being to fulfill the purpose of receiving, carrying and bringing forth baby Jesus. And the whole of humanity from that point forward bears the imprint of her obedience.

Why did this stir my soul? Because I saw her story from God’s perspective, and I know His view is unchanging. From God’s perspective, we are individuals designed to function as a whole. Each unique plan works toward the same destiny: the furtherance of the kingdom of God through Christ.

There was only one Mary — mother of Jesus — who birthed The Word into the world.

There was, is, and will always be only one Jesus, the Messiah.

There is only one me and only one you.

Consider God’s perspective. Allow these thoughts to saturate your soul and ignite your call:

  • You are unique. Only one of you exists, and only you can share the story of your life in Christ. Your story has the power to draw others to Christ. Your story contains the spirit of encouragement that other brothers- and sisters-in-Christ need in order to fulfill the mission uniquely bestowed upon them.

  • You are chosen. Do you remember when you first sensed God calling you to write, to share your words with others? Do you know why He chose you? He chose you to fulfill a very specific purpose through the messages only you can share. The same reason He chose Mary — and countless others in His Word — is to make Him known as only you can do.

  • You are equipped. Tell me. What do you lack — I mean truly lack — to fulfill God’s plan for your time here on earth? Look to Mary. For a moment, she questioned the how of God’s will for her. Yet she conceived, carried and birthed Jesus while remaining a virgin. Now, I ask you. What can’t God do? What can’t you do with His power living inside you?

You and I are called to write for the glory of God. We get to share The Word with the world through our unique stories … the messages we carry inside.

I love this truth! We can trust that God has placed certain callings and gifts in our lives intentionally. That intention being, to give Him glory. With that in mind, He will be faithful to guide us through the pursuit and growth of them, by relationship with Him. We just need courage to take the first step.

  5. Thank you for this encouragement!
