5 Characteristics of Blogging as a Ministry

As a Christian blogger, do you remember the first time when you felt God’s call to start blogging and writing for His glory? Did He give you a specific word or a message, or perhaps He talked to you through people? 

God’s invitation to start blogging was a process in my life. God talked to me through His Word, forming my identity as a writer, preacher, and poet. I treasured every specific word and its interpretation and wrote them down in a special notebook.

And then a day came when, while I was reading a blog post, God used a couple of sentences in this post to tell me clearly and without a doubt that I should start a blogging ministry. Yes, a ministry. From the beginning, it was clear this was not just writing and it was not about me. It was initiated by God, meant to be carried through His power and for His glory, to encourage and inspire people. 

So what are the characteristics of faith blogging as a ministry, and what does that mean for our writing journey? I want to share with you five prerequisites and characteristics of the blogging ministry. 

1. The first characteristic is that blogging and writing, in general, are initiated by God. He issues a specific call and invitation. He is the One starting the ministry, entrusting it to us and providing for the success of this ministry. This is His ministry through us. 
   
   
2. Another prerequisite for the blogging and writing ministry is our faithfulness. Not our skills, qualifications, or resources but our faithfulness. God grants us the mercy to find us trustworthy to entrust us with a ministry. Apostle Paul says it clearly in this verse: “I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service” (1 Timothy 1:12, ESV).
   
   
3. Another condition for the blogging ministry is that it is closely related to our spiritual purity and daily walk of obedience. We depend on God for giving us the words and the messages He wants to spread through us. It is our responsibility to be pure vessels, set apart for a holy purpose. It is up to us to keep our hearts open and sensitive so can hear and discern His voice. 
   
   
4. The fourth characteristic of the blogging ministry is that we need God’s strength, equipping, and anointing to carry it through. It is not recommendable to rely on our own strength and writing skills. Yes, it is our responsibility to learn and develop our skills, but it is God who empowers us to carry out this ministry. 
   
   
5. The fifth characteristic of blogging as a ministry is that its success is not measured in numbers but in faithfulness to deliver God’s messages in His timing and way and with the specific words and voice He gives us. Numbers are a good thing, and they can help us grow, but they are not an indicator of true success. 

So we see that blogging as a ministry is designed to bring us even closer to God. It is birthed from intimacy with God and leads to even greater intimacy and dependency on Him. It is His tool to shape us in the character and likeness of Jesus. It is His way to teach us to walk closely with Him and learn to work in a team with our Creator. It is the enormous privilege to co-create with God, to be His vessel and His voice.
