Why Every Writer Needs an Email List (And How To Start One Today)

Are you showing up consistently online but still feeling like your words aren’t reaching the people who need them most? You’re not alone — and you’re not doing anything wrong. There’s a more intentional, meaningful way to share your message and steward what God has given you, without fighting algorithms or feeling overlooked. If you’ve been craving a deeper connection with your audience and a more lasting impact with your words, this post will show you why it matters and how to begin!

Are you faithfully writing, posting, and showing up online, but you still feel like your words are getting lost in the noise? You’re not alone. Social media can be a beautiful tool, but it’s also unpredictable. One day your message reaches many … the next it barely reaches a few. That’s why every writer needs something more steady, more personal, and more lasting: an email list.

Think of it this way: Your email list isn’t just a marketing tool. It’s ministry. It’s relationship. It’s a direct line to the people God has called you to serve.

Scripture reminds us in Habakkuk 2:2, “Write the vision and make it plain …” (KJ21). But what good is writing the vision if the people who need it never see it? An email list helps you steward your message well by placing it directly into someone’s hands (and their inbox).

Unlike social media platforms, your email list belongs to you. No algorithm decides who gets your message. No trending topic competes for attention. It’s just you, your words, and the reader who chose to hear from you. That’s powerful.

And let’s not overlook this: People who join your email list are saying yes to you. They’re inviting you into their daily lives. That’s sacred ground.

So how do you start without feeling overwhelmed?

Start simple.

  • First, choose an email platform like MailerLite, ConvertKit, or Flodesk. Don’t overthink it. Just pick one and begin.
  • Next, create a small free resource, often called a lead magnet. This could be a short devotional, a few journal prompts, or even a simple recipe guide, something that reflects your voice and serves your audience well.
  • Then, invite people. Add a sign-up form to your website. Share it on social media. Mention it when you post. You don’t need a large audience. You just need to be faithful with the few.

Remember what Jesus did in Luke 16:10, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (NIV). Your email list may start small, but God can grow it in His time.
Building an email list isn’t about numbers. It’s about connection. It’s about showing up consistently for the people God has entrusted to you. It’s about creating a space where your words can breathe, encourage, and point others back to Him.

You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to start. Your voice matters, and someone is waiting to hear it.
