When the Ink Is Dry — the Power of Rest in the Space In Between
As I completed the final draft of my dissertation, I was suddenly overcome with tears. It was finally finished and published — 400 pages of the hardest thing I have ever written.
But in the months that followed, I felt lost, like I was in a vacuum and directionless. There was so much rich content that I wanted to write about, but I just couldn’t.
There’s a unique mix of joy and exhaustion that comes when you finish a big project — you hit “send” or set the pen down, and there it is: your work, complete.
For some, that moment feels like crossing the finish line. For others, it’s a strange void. The rush of deadlines is gone, but so is the constant sense of purpose that those deadlines once provided. And if we’re honest, we often don’t know what to do with ourselves in that space between “finished” and “what’s next.”
It is in the space between one project and the next that God is calling us to rest.
The space in between seasons of productivity and seasons of seeming lack is not a wasteland — but holy ground. It’s a place where rest becomes the very soil that will nourish your next calling.
Rest is a place of power.
Jesus modeled this rhythm so beautifully. After teaching and healing crowds, He would often withdraw to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16). His ministry was marked by action, yes, but also by intentional pauses. Rest wasn’t an afterthought — it was a source of power.
Rest is a place of trust.
When the ink is dry, rest becomes a declaration of trust (Psalm 37:5). We lay down our striving and remember that the results aren’t ours to control. The calling God has placed on our lives doesn’t expire in the quiet moments — it grows there. Seeds take root in stillness before they ever break ground.
Rest is a place of perspective.
Rest also gives us perspective (Colossians 3:2). When you step back from the work, you begin to see what you couldn’t see in the midst of deadlines and details. You notice God’s fingerprints in the process. You remember the prayers He answered. You find gratitude for the unexpected ways He shaped you along the way.
Rest is a place of inspiration.
Rest invites inspiration. In the quiet, God often whispers the next step. He refreshes our creativity, reorients our hearts, and renews our vision. It’s in the pause after the ink is dry that new ideas are born — not out of pressure but out of peace.

So how do we embrace this kind of rest?
- Pause on purpose. Don’t rush to fill the space with the next project. Set aside time to simply be with God without an agenda.
- Praise God’s faithfulness. Reflect on what He has done through the work you’ve just completed. Give thanks before asking for what’s next.
- Protect your heart from striving. Resist the urge to measure your worth by productivity. Let your identity rest in Christ, not in your output.
- Position yourself for the next assignment. As you rest, stay open to the Spirit’s leading. He may be preparing you for something you can’t yet imagine.
When the ink is dry, your calling isn’t over — you’re being prepared for a new chapter. Let rest be the bridge between what God has done and what He’s about to do. Because in His Kingdom, the time in between is never wasted.
All for Jesus,
Denise
How do you carve out time for rest when you have been poured out for a season?
Thank you for the encouragement. It touched my heart. Thank you for be led by God in writing this. It’s truly a blessing!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I printed out the four suggestions for embracing rest and put them on my wall! This is the place I have found myself in this past month and it has been so challenging. What a wonderful source of encouragement and affirmation.
