The Role of Prayer in Your Writing Journey

We know you love to write and pray for your reader, but did you know you can pray over your words before you even write them? That’s right! As the foundation for our writing, this is the most important thing we can do!

“Lord, teach us to pray” (ESV) … This was what the disciples asked of Jesus in Luke 11:1 after watching Him spend time with the Father. We don’t know all the details, but we do know that what they witnessed Jesus doing was powerful and influential enough that they wanted to know how to do it too. Prayer changes things.

As writers, it’s easy to get into a rhythm of putting words to paper and forgetting to stop and pray. But, like the disciples, we would be wise to recognize that prayer isn’t just an addition to our writing process; it’s the foundation of all we do. We need to commune with the Father if we are to fulfill what He has called us to do.

Here are just three ways prayer plays the main role in our writing journeys:

1. Prayer displays a dependence on God.

Prayer is always the ultimate act of orientation; it helps us recognize both who God is and who we are. He is on His throne, and we have the opportunity to serve Him and glorify Him with the words we write. He is the One who inspires us, directs us and gives us the words. When we start with prayer, we admit our need for Him and have the opportunity to humbly ask for His help.

2. Prayer guides us.

As we encounter moments of feeling stuck or uninspired in our writing, these are opportunities for prayer. When we ask, God is faithful to answer. Through prayer, we listen for the Spirit’s promptings and act as He leads.

3. Prayer provides.

Lastly, through prayer, God encourages, equips, calls, comforts and provides for us. Writing is not always an easy road, but God knows that too. As we spend time with Him in prayer, He provides refreshment and encouragement for the journey. He also opens doors and opportunities in His timing when we ask.

Have you spent time praying about and for your writing lately? Are you running to the Father when the words won’t come? Like the disciples, are you asking God to teach you to pray so you can further depend on Him?

Prayer is essential, and I’m praying this serves as a reminder today to make it a priority at every point of your writing journey.
