Navigating the Christmas Chaos With Grace

Christmastime comes with many to-dos, schedules, pressures and responsibilities that can be overwhelming, and our writing can take a back seat! Here is how to overcome the stress that comes with the season so you can shine the light on the birth of Jesus with your words …

As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to start planning for the annual work Christmas party. What should I wear? Do I need to go shopping? These questions quickly spiral into a whirlwind of Christmas shopping for the kids, my husband and our extended families. Soon, the logistics of family gatherings take center stage. But wait, there’s more — what about the Christmas lights outside and decorating the tree?

Just as I begin to feel overwhelmed, a letter from school arrives, reminding me that I need to bake Christmas cookies for my child’s class party. My mom’s health is declining, so the responsibility of organizing and cooking for our family’s gathering falls more heavily on my shoulders. And then there’s the Elf on the Shelf — a source of nightly mischief that I must orchestrate amid the busyness.

That’s not even the whole story. I also want to create a freebie for my readers and craft special holiday posts to bring them encouragement. And let’s not forget about Christmas musical practices at church, caroling to the homebound, delivering goodie baskets to the assisted living center … and the list goes on.

Can you relate? What should be a season of celebrating the birth of Jesus often turns into a time of stress, chaos and overwhelm. Instead of extending grace to our children, we become grumpy because we’re sleep-deprived and mentally overextended. Instead of feeling joy while creating content for our readers, we feel burdened by obligation and necessity. But these are all good things! So how does a busy mom and wife keep her positivity, loving attitude and caring heart when there’s so much on her plate? And as a writer, how do I serve my readers with joy when chaos surrounds me?

Believe it or not, I have found an answer. There are two key ways we — as wives, moms, daughters, writers and more — can calm the chaos around us.

1. Draw Near to Jesus.

When seasons of chaos and overwhelm hit, it’s a reminder that it’s time to draw near to Him. Spending time in prayer, worship, praise and in the Word — with a journal nearby — can bring peace in the midst of the storm. I love to not only read but also visualize Zephaniah 3:17 in my mind.

God delights in me. He swoops me up in His arms and holds me close. I can feel His heartbeat against my chest as He cradles me, and that love, pulsing from His heart, brings calmness into my life. Then He sings over me. I imagine Him swaying me back and forth, just as I did with my babies, while He sings His words of love and comfort. Visualizing myself running to Jesus with open arms and Him embracing me, delighting in me and singing over me transforms my attitude and actions.

2. Care for Me.

Yes, you heard that right. With so many checklists and activities, it’s easy to neglect self-care. But in times of chaos and overwhelm, it’s crucial to schedule regular moments for yourself. What feeds your soul and brings you joy? Is it a long workout? A trip to the spa? Lunch with a friend? Be proactive, and plan these “care for me” moments ahead of time. Put them on your calendar, and prioritize them. Remember, you are more important than a plate of cookies.

As we enter this busy season, my prayer for you is that you would find yourself drawing near to God, basking in His love, and hearing His voice in your heart. Embrace your worth, honor yourself, and navigate the Christmas season with grace and joy.
