I don’t know if I’m really called to do this.

We don’t often talk about the self-doubt that can come with committing to a creative process. It creeps up unexpectedly, causing us to question our calling. Self-doubt usually indicates an uncertainty about ourselves, our abilities, and God’s capability to do something through us. And truth be told, it can be one of the most crippling hurdles to overcome during the writing process.

How many times have you felt this way? You’re sitting at your laptop, fingers poised over the keyboard, and then BOOM — your thoughts start spiraling.

What if I don’t have what it takes to write this?
What if people don’t like what I have to say?
What if I heard God wrong?
What if, what if, what if …

These what-ifs can paralyze us, making us second-guess every word and sentence. But let’s pause for a moment and consider:

What if doubt itself is part of the process? What if God is using these moments of uncertainty to refine our trust in Him?

In Exodus 4:10, Moses expresses a similar doubt, saying, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue” (NIV). Moses, the man chosen to lead God’s people, doubted his ability to communicate effectively. Yet God’s response wasn’t to boost Moses’ confidence in his own gifts and talents but to remind him that He, the Lord, would be with him and teach him what to say.

Friend, if you find yourself identifying with Moses today, the truth is: Your doubt doesn’t disqualify you from your calling; it’s actually an invitation to lean deeper into God’s strength.

So the next time you find yourself spiraling, take a deep breath and remember that the creative process is more than just producing work — it’s an opportunity to deepen your dependence on your Creator. God is with you in the uncertainty, guiding your thoughts and using your words to impact others in ways you may not even see.

In those moments of doubt, instead of asking, “What if I fail?” try asking, “What if God uses this for something greater than I imagined?” Trust that He will, and take that next step forward, even if it’s just typing another word. It’s time to let your calling override your doubt and let God’s faithfulness fuel your creativity.

Have you ever sat down to write and immediately felt bombarded by negative thoughts? You question if you are good enough. You’re unsure if anyone would want to read what’s on your heart to share. Friend, you’re not alone. Whether you’ve been writing for years or you are just getting started, we have good news: These thoughts don’t have to keep you from your calling any longer. 1. I would like to get the free devotional on moving past doubt but I don’t see a way to do that. The link goes to a page that talks about the devotional but I don’t see the devotional there, nor any way of downloading it from that page or signing up for a download to be sent. I’m using a tablet. Do I need to use a desktop computer to get this?
