How To Write a Bio That Shines (Not Bores)!

As writers, we don’t often think about our bio because we try to think of our audience! But our bio is our opportunity to make a lasting first impression. It matters just as much as any of our other words. Today, we are sharing how to write your very best bio …

As a writer, your bio is your opportunity to make a lasting first impression. Yet too many bios read like a bland list of facts — more fitting for the back of a cereal box than a personal introduction. A compelling bio, however, will spark interest, make a connection and ultimately attract followers. It serves as an introduction to who you are, not just what you do.

The Two Essential Bios: Short and Long

To effectively communicate your story and mission, you need two types of bios: a short bio and a long bio. Each serves a specific purpose and allows your audience to get to know you at different levels.

1. The Short Bio (A Snapshot).

A short bio is like a quick handshake — it introduces you and provides just enough information to intrigue the reader. Typically, this bio is one to three sentences long and is used for:

  • Social media profiles.
  • Guest posts or articles.
  • Podcast or media guest appearances.

The short bio needs to be captivating and informative, giving readers a reason to engage further. Include your name, key accomplishments and a hint of personality. The short bio is a place where your purpose can shine as well. In the platform-building group within COMPEL Pro, we use the following sentence to help zone in on our purpose: I write for ______ to help them overcome _____ so that _______.

2. The Long Bio (A Deeper Dive).

A long bio allows you to expand on your story, mission and qualifications. This bio should be 150-300 words and is best suited for:

  • Your website’s “About” page.
  • Speaking engagements or event introductions.
  • Your book-jacket flap, back cover, or “About the author” page in a book.

This bio gives readers insight into not just what you do but why you do it. It should include details about your journey, your audience and your accomplishments.

Allowing Your Personality To Shine

If you don’t want your bio to come across as generic but you still need to include specific information, how can your personality shine through?

There are several strategies to help transform your bio from boring and forgettable to one that truly connects with the hearts of your followers.

  • Make your tone and language help your personality shine.
  • Include something about your personal life (family, pets, hobbies, etc.).
  • Use a story-driven approach to explain what you do.
  • Sprinkle a little humor into your bio without overdoing it.
  • Allow your passion to be contagious as you explain why you do what you do.
  • Include a fun, unexpected fact about yourself.

Whether it’s a quick snapshot or an in-depth story, your bio is a powerful marketing tool. An appealing, engaging bio can attract followers, open doors to opportunities and solidify your identity. You only get one chance to make a first impression — make sure your bio shines and not bores.

  1. Creating a bio for me is a difficult task for me. I don’t often feel comfortable speaking about myself a “promotional” way. Any suggestions on how to overcome this feeling, or examples of how to keep the bio God focused.
