How To Spark Creativity When Deadlines Loom Large
Staring at my computer, my mind whirred with a blur of deadlines, making it difficult to concentrate. All the ideas swirling around in my head should have helped me meet my deadlines, but the looming deadlines stifled creativity instead. During such times, I have learned that I can ignite creativity by altering my usual writing process.
It is easy to fall into a rut in our writing practices and feel as if the well has run dry. However, changing our writing approach and setting can rejuvenate both our mindset and our writing. By altering our location, rediscovering our purpose, and prioritizing our walk with God, we can get unstuck and inspire the flow of writing once more.

Switch the Location.
In a recent season when I had six speaking events in six weeks, along with writing deadlines, caregiving responsibilities for my mom, and numerous doctor’s appointments, I needed to adjust my writing practice to improve my focus. By changing my location from my usual spot, the words and ideas began to flow as I walked and spoke into my phone, no longer hindered by the distractions on my computer (notifications, emails, etc.). *BONUS*: This helped me think outside my normal box and also allowed me to get my steps in!
Check the Motivation.
Sometimes, creativity is stifled when we put too much pressure on completing our writing and meeting deadlines. Refreshing our minds with the reason for writing each piece helps to remove barriers, igniting a fresh zeal for our purpose. Rediscovering our “why” can also allow us to view our writing projects from a new vantage point. We get to write — not we have to write.
Fuel the Inspiration.
Deadlines are hardly inspiring, right? Sometimes we may feel overwhelmed and struggle to concentrate. We might even be tempted to forgo more important priorities to accomplish our writing goals. However, neglecting what matters most will hinder our productivity. This may sound like the Sunday School answer, y’all, but it is true — putting the “big rock” in first — having my personal time with Jesus — has been the greatest inspiration for writing when I am feeling fried.
I don’t know how He does it, but every time I seek Him first, the Holy Spirit gives me fresh inspiration.
When you struggle to spark creativity, studying scriptural passages related to your writing can also help you focus and provide fresh material.
Pro tip: Resisting the urge to edit while writing can help to keep the words coming and the inspiration flowing.
All for Jesus,
Denise

Fuel the inspiration!! YES! I have had this same experience Denise! Thank you for sharing all of these fantastic tips! Also, your Pro Tip is incredibly helpful for me. It is confirming because I often find myself trying for perfection in the first draft and have to tell myself that no one will be reading that version 🙂
A walk or a hike works wonders for me. However, in the end, I have learned that showing up to the work (with prayer and courage), starting messy, and trusting God to show up in it works!
YES! I have to get outdoors daily. It is so helpful. And showing up is so important, too!
