How To Consistently Engage With Your Email List

Email lists are important to any author. But how do we continue to actively engage our people effectively without bothering them? Here are ways you can build a loyal audience, nurture relationships, and encourage book sales starting today ...

Engaging with your email list is one of the most effective ways to build a loyal audience, nurture relationships, and encourage book sales. But how do I best engage with my email list when I feel like weekly or monthly newsletters are old and not appealing to my peeps.

Consider some questions to help you begin your list of how to connect with your email list.

What can I deliver to my readers that provides value and encouragement?

Your subscribers should look forward to your emails because they add value to their lives. Here are some content ideas. Could you encourage your readers with a testimony, a “word of the week” to encourage their spiritual journey, a short devotional, or a Bible verse with practical application??

What about something that provides actionable tips and resources? Possibly quick self-care tips, a challenge for the week, or printable resources for their personal use.

Would you be willing to give your readers a behind-the-scenes look at your life? A morning routine, a workout routine, a writing update, or a lesson God is teaching you?

How can I foster two-way communication with my readers?

We know people engage more when they feel involved. Can you invite replies by asking a question at the end of an email? Have you considered using a Google form to poll your readers?

Would you share subscriber stories? Ask subscribers to share how a message or challenge has impacted them?

Invite subscribers to reply with prayer requests. Could you end a monthly “Prayer and Praise” email by highlighting answered prayers and new requests?

Should I create themed email series at times other than holidays?

A series helps keep people engaged over multiple emails. We see them most often at holiday time such as lent. Creating a mini-devotional series for three to five days is a great way to reignite your email list. Offering challenges for seven days or 30 days is also a great idea.

When can I offer my readers exclusive content?

Make your email list feel important by offering them access they can’t find anywhere else. Consider giving your readers sneak peeks of your upcoming book or a discount code to purchase your book.

GIve your readers early access to challenges or devotionals before offering them to the public.

Create a printable download for your readers each month. Journal prompts for a month, a habit tracker, or a coloring page are just some ideas to get your mind brainstorming ideas.

Is keeping a consistent schedule important?

Yes. Yes, it is. Consistency builds trust. Some options include weekly, biweekly, or monthly emails. Let your readers know your email schedule upfront.

These questions and possible ideas are simply meant to get your own wheels turning so that you can meet and engage with your readers in a way that fits you and your readers.

So go. Have a brainstorming session while these questions are fresh on your mind.

Blessings,
Karen Smith

  1. Karen, thank you for this post! Consistency is definitely where I struggle most with my email list. I love your questions—they’ve already sparked some ideas for me. I’m planning a little brainstorming session this week to think through a few mini-series and some exclusive resources I can share with my subscribers. I really appreciate the reminder that my list is a place for encouragement and connection, not just updates.
