How To Build an Email List Even if You’re Starting From Zero
If the idea of building an email list feels intimidating (or a little discouraging), you’re not alone. Many Christian writers quietly wonder, “Who would even want to hear from me?” The truth is email lists aren’t about numbers. They’re about relationships. And starting from zero does not mean starting from nothing. If “build an email list from ground zero” is on your to-do list, hold on to this: God doesn’t need a big audience to do meaningful work. He just needs your yes.

Here is where to start:
Start With One, Not One Thousand.
Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, shift your attention to who you can serve right now. If one woman joined your email list today, what would you want her to feel when she opened your email? Encouraged? Seen? Less alone?
Scripture reminds us, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much …” (Luke 16:10, NIV). Showing up faithfully for one reader builds the foundation for many.
Create Something Simple but Meaningful.
You don’t need a fancy freebie or a perfectly branded funnel. You need something helpful and honest, something your audience is craving.
Think:
- A short devotional or reflection.
- A one-page writing prompt or prayer.
- A list of scriptures that carried you through a hard season.
Your free resource should answer one small question or meet one real need. That’s it.
Invite, Don’t Perform.
You don’t have to “sell” your email list. Just invite people into what you’re already doing.
Try sharing:
- Why you started writing in the first place.
- What readers can expect from your emails.
- How staying connected allows you to go deeper than social media.
People sign up when they trust your heart, not your marketing skills.
Be Consistent, Not Perfect.
Once someone joins, keep showing up, even if it’s messy, even if it’s short, and even if you wonder whether it matters. Email is sacred space. It’s quieter and slower. It’s more personal. And it’s one of the best ways to steward the message God has placed on your life, right to your subscribers’ inbox.
Every email list starts at zero. Every writer you admire once wondered if anyone would read their words. Faithfulness always comes before fruit. Don’t give up, friend.
Blessings,
Regina Lewis
Where are you right now with building an email list: starting from zero, rebuilding, or growing slowly?
Hi Regina, Could you share some email apps that allow you send group emails individually? and I know textedlly — will send group text message individually but I have not subscribed to an email app that will do similarly. If you could possibly share, I would appreciate it.
I have a blog, and all my readers get an email from it every time I publish. Is that what you’re referring to as an email list?
If so, are you saying that we can add emails( more people) to it or are you speaking of our existing subscribers?
I’m sorry if I should know this already, but I need clarity. It’s something I’ve not understood.
Thank you for your time.
Hey there! Great question. The folks who sign up for a freebie or resource, the people you send emails to are your email subscribers. A big challenge many content creators face is gaining more email subscribers. I hope this helps.
Thank you, Regina.
Great article, Regina. Thank you for sharing your insight with us on what could be so daunting.
Gratefully, Jennifer
You are very welcome. We’re in this together.
