3 Ways Our Relationship With God Influences Our Writing
Friend, have you considered how our relationship with God influences our writing?
Having the presence of God in our lives transforms everything. So we may expect that our writing will be God-inspired, God-empowered, and God-honoring.
This makes the main difference between a Christian writer and a non-Christian one. Our ongoing relationship with the living God through His indwelling Spirit changes our writing in three main areas: its purpose, its process, and its impact.
1. Our Relationship With God Defines the Purpose of Our Writing.
What is the purpose of our writing? What is our motivation and driving force to share our stories and the lessons God taught us?
As Christian writers, we don’t write driven by ambition, vanity, and the desire to achieve success and fame. We don’t even write to make a living or build up a successful career. God’s Word warns us: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3-4, NIV).
We write because we are called.
Our primary motivation and passion are to answer God’s calling and fulfill His will, thereby glorifying Him as faithful servants. We share our stories because they are part of our testimony and because we want to encourage, inspire, help, and comfort others.
We are passionate about building others up and making disciples. As Christ followers, we devote ourselves to being Jesus’ witnesses by sharing how God’s grace worked in our lives. We point others to Jesus and live as God’s ambassadors and hope-bringers in a dark world.
And as we write, we ourselves heal and grow, in freedom and wholeness.
2. God’s Presence Changes the Process of Our Writing.
The indwelling and encompassing presence of the Lord transforms the way we write. We are not just creators, we are cocreators with God, collaborating with Him.
This is mind-blowing and transformational. We are not left alone in our writing ministries, and we don’t have to rely on our limited capabilities and talents. In every moment, for every writing project, we have the privilege to ask the Lord for ideas, words, messages, and the right way to share our stories. We can lean on Him and rely on His power to work in us and our writing.
Many use and rely on AI for their writing, but we have the best writing Coach, Mentor, and Helper on our side. It is up to us to be mindful of Him and to involve Him through prayer and abiding in His presence.

3. Our Relationship With God Changes the Impact of Our Writing.
Inevitably, God’s involvement in our writing changes its impact. We may feel happy and content when we see large numbers of people reading our articles, purchasing our books, and engaging with our content. However, these are things that are merely on the surface, temporal and fluctuating.
What truly matters and what only God can do is to use our words to influence and transform people’s minds and hearts. Only He can answer our burning longing so beautifully expressed in the poem “If I Can Stop One Heart from Breaking” by the great Emily Dickinson.
Yes, only God can give us Spirit-breathed words able to transform, carrying eternal meaning and impact.
As Christian writers, our relationship with God is the centerpiece of our writing. Everything comes from it: our calling, motivation, passion, and the ability to write God-inspired and God-honoring words and stories.
Yielding to God and seeking His face, help, and direction in our writing sets us in the right direction to fulfill our calling successfully.
