How To Get Started When You’re Struggling To Share Your Story

You have a story to share. You are excited and ready, but you’re also struggling with how to proceed. We are here to help you! Here are three tips to help you begin telling your story to the world and those who need it most ...

Has the process of starting ever stopped you from sharing your story?

If you are in Christ, the reality is you have a story to share: a story of redemption, grace and the Lord’s faithfulness. However, sometimes we stumble over the start simply because we’re afraid, unsure, or even overwhelmed by the process.

While there might not be a recipe to follow or exact steps to take, here are a few tips to help you start sharing the story God has woven into your life.

1. Pray.

“He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24, ESV).

Prayer is always the right place to start. If God has called you to share your story, He will be faithful to help you in every step. Before you begin, take some time to pray for boldness, for the words to come, and for the right opportunities to share.

2. Start at the Beginning.

“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day” (Acts 22:3, ESV).

In Acts 22, Paul was presented with an opportunity to share his story, and we see that he started at the beginning. He first shared about his birth, upbringing and life before Christ. Then he explained what Jesus did for him and what his life looked like afterward.

As cliche as it is, the beginning is always a good place to start. If you’re struggling to share your story, start with what your life looked like at the beginning. Not only will this help to get you started, but it will also help to make your story relatable and engaging.

3. Remain Faithful.

“As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20, NIV).

Shortly after the Holy Spirit fell at Pentecost in Acts 2, Peter and John were brought before the Sanhedrin and commanded not to speak or teach about Jesus. But as we see in Acts 4:20, their response was to remain faithful and obedient to the call on their lives: to go and make disciples by sharing what Jesus has done.

We have the same calling. Sharing your story is an act of obedience. Offer God all of it … including the beginning. Keep in mind that, especially when writing out your story, you don’t have to get it exactly right the first time. Be faithful and take a step, knowing the Lord will guide you and refine your words as you go.

If the words aren’t coming, the fears are creeping in, and the process has you feeling overwhelmed, know you aren’t alone. Pray, start at the beginning, and fight to remain faithful to the calling God has placed on your life. Remember: Your story is simply part of God’s bigger story of redemption, and ultimately your goal is to glorify Him. He will take care of the rest!

Think about a time the Lord has used someone else’s story to impact your life. Consider using that example as a model to help you get started sharing your story too.

  1. Thank you, Samantha Decker, for your encouraging words of wisdom. I started, and I started at the beginning. I read Psalm 136 first and wrote words in a notebook, the first like this since joining Compel on June 1st (thanks to encouragement from Hadassah Treu when I inquired about Compel). Thank you so much for your guidance in this post! This is new but you made it seem right.

  2. Thank you for your encouragement. I knew in 2020 I was to write a book but these last 5 years have been so hard! Although, it added to my story I haven’t been able to move forward.
